February is Black History Month and it’s an opportunity to honour and celebrate the unique intersecting identities, culture, language, and lived experiences of Black individuals and communities. It also gives us a chance to reflect on the past and recognize the notable contributions of the Black community.

This month allows us to educate ourselves on the history of Black resilience, enslavement, discrimination, and the criminalization of people of African descent, while acknowledging that racism is still prevalent in our society today.

This year, York Region CAS in collaboration with the Agency’s Black Staff Advisory Council will be celebrating Black History Month by focusing on the theme: Black Joy. While it is important to recognize the challenges faced by Black families, we must also acknowledge the joy, strength, and resilience that exist within each family structure. To commemorate, foster discussion, and offer a place to connect for Black History Month, we will be hosting two Chai & Chats sessions for all staff hosted by guest speakers that will be highlighting Black Joy.

In addition, the Black Staff Advisory Council will also be distributing legacy calendars to Black youth, resource parents, and volunteer drivers to recognize and celebrate Black excellence throughout the year.

Beyond these initiatives, we will be sharing various events and celebrations that are taking place across York Region in honour of Black History Month.

We also encourage our community to take part, learn, and celebrate Black history throughout the month. Click on the links below for more information!
