February is Black History Month, and it is a time to come together to celebrate the unique intersecting identities, culture, language, and way of life of the Black Community. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the past and the many contributions that our ancestors have made. It gives us a chance to reflect and educate ourselves on the history of Black resiliency, contributions, enslavement, discrimination, and criminalization of people of African descent, and to remember that racism is still active and present in our society today.
This year York Region CAS led by the Black Staff Advisory Council will be celebrating Black History Month by focusing on the themes, Our Future, Our Youth, and Black Entrepreneurs. To highlight the diversity of Black and Youth Entrepreneurs within the community, the Council will be sending out biographies both internally and externally throughout the month to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements and contributions of these influential figures.
In addition, the Council will be providing all staff with informative resources and extending invitations to Black History Month themed events throughout the month!
York Region CAS is proud to recognize and commemorate Black History Month through these initiatives and events to honour the past, celebrate the present, and shape the future.
